The eight smart features

Even at first sight, the new TOSHIBA heat pumps convey a professional impression. USX chillers reach their installation sites in a compact, modular form with their striking X-design. Combined side-by-side to save space, a total capacity of up to 25,600 kW can be achieved with up to 128 modules. Thanks to its modularity and the perfect part-load performance, the system is able to deliver this huge amount of power in a theoretically infinite number of steps from 5% of a single unit up to maximum capacity. The smart features demonstrate how the intelligent system design produces significant savings in terms of space and energy as well as perfect reliability.

1. THE USX EDGE RELIABLY DELIVERS HEATING AND COOLING ALL YEAR ROUND

The POWERFUL HEATING TYPE (pHt) USX Edge is a specialist in year-round heating. It reliably produces pumped hot water for production processes or building heating, for example, between outdoor temperatures of a frosty –25°C to a tropical +43°C.

Regardless of whether the cold water is being generated for

  • air conditioning in large buildings
  • processes
  • data centers
  • food technology
  • cold rooms
  • medical technology
  • skating rinks

– supply water temperatures of between –15 and +30°C cover all requirements. The unit can be operated at an outdoor temperature of between –20 and +52°C.

2. THE DISTINCT X-DESIGN OPTIMIZES AIR FLOW AND TAKES UP LESS INSTALLATION SPACE THAN CONVENTIONAL SYSTEMS

Saving space = lower costs

The patented X-design covers several components: it allows single units to be installed seamlessly as well as the highly efficient routing of air flow between them.
Spacing from walls and other objects can thereby be minimized.
Components requiring maintenance, such as the compressor unit, can also be accessed with ease thanks to the intelligent design.
A hydraulic group with inverter pump is supplied ready for connecting up and is integrated in the compressor section to save space.

The recessed water connections with their distinctive Edge design also contribute to effective management of space. The compressor section is offset from the heat exchanger section by 300 mm, delivering space benefits when the modules are installed in a parallel row.

3. THE 4-IN-1 MODULE CONCEPT TRANSLATES INTO MAXIMUM RELIABILITY AND REDUNDANCY

By using four separate refrigeration cycles, the 4-in-1 module-in-module concept ensures maximum operational reliability and safety and spreading of risk. Each circuit has an inverter-controlled TOSHIBA twin-rotary compressor and two refrigerant/air heat exchangers – two circuits share one refrigerant/water heat exchanger.

But this isn't just for dramatic scenarios such as a circuit failing – day in, day out a heat pump or chiller also needs to handle tasks such as defrosting during heating operation and there is also periodic unit maintenance to consider.
Even in these standard situations, the USX system responds perfectly: defrost operations are undertaken alternately – only the circuit currently being defrosted is stationary, the other three circuits of a module continue to produce pumped hot water (continuous heating). So there is no need for an extra buffer tank.
Only a small part of the entire system is temporarily taken off line for the duration of maintenance work; something which only TOSHIBA can boast.

4. HEATING AND COOLING OUTPUT OF UP TO 25,600 KW CAN BE COMBINED IN A MODULAR FASHION

The scope for modular combinations permits maximum flexibility when it comes to planning, operations and, if necessary, expansion.
The highly efficient inverter technology enables low output in the part-load range as well as huge output in the megawatt range under extreme conditions.

No matter whether you are using a single module with a nominal capacity of 150 kW or a combination of modules with a capacity of several megawatts – the clever controller system can manage any combination. And you can manage the costs with just three potential controller devices:

  1. The Unit Controller (UC):
    This is included in every individual module as standard and optimizes the four refrigeration cycles by controlling the inverter and compressor. It also ensures that the water outlet temperature reaches the preset temperature and controls the integrated inverter water pump.
  2. The Module Controller (MC):
    This is an optional control unit and can manage the unit controllers of one group of up to 16 modules.
  3. The Group Controller (GC):
    Again, this is an optional control unit and can manage up to 8 groups and their associated module controllers.

5. ENERGY-EFFICIENT CONTROL IN THE PART-LOAD RANGE OF UP TO 5% THANKS TO THE TRIED-AND-TESTED TOSHIBA TWIN-ROTARY COMPRESSOR

The twin-rotary compressor with inverter control developed and manufactured in-house at TOSHIBA is the system's power pack. This unit proves its durability, efficiency, and performance day after day in literally millions of home & business air conditioning systems the world over.
As one of the 4 beating hearts in every USX module, the compressor lays the groundwork for the system's distinct benefits: Part-load operation of a module up to 5% of nominal capacity, outdoor temperature operating range of between -25°C and +52°C, and supply water temperatures of between -15°C and +55°C are therefore possible.

The choice of refrigerant is also beyond doubt for TOSHIBA. Only the most state-of-the-art, cost-effective, and environmentally-friendly refrigerant available is acceptable: R32

6. THE ELECTRIC POWER INPUT IS REDUCED AS STANDARD FOR LOW INVESTMENT AND OPERATING COSTS

The USX Edge benefits from harmonic suppression from its PWM converter. By reducing the running current, the TOSHIBA system can work at maximum energy efficiency with a power factor of 99%.

These relatively complex circumstances result in three benefits:

  1. Cost savings during installation
    The electrical equipment for the power supply (wire size & safety devices) can be of smaller dimensions.
  2. Cost savings during configuration
    No extra costs are incurred from using active harmonics filters.
  3. Cost savings during operation
    Thanks to the high effective power factor cos φ, power consumption during operation is reduced.

7. STANDARDIZED UNIT CONFIGURATION ENSURES ALL-YEAR-ROUND AVAILABILITY FROM THE WAREHOUSE IN VIENNA

Conventional heat pumps and chillers often suffer from too many configuration options.
In practice, this results in lengthy configuration and delivery processes, which are far too complex.

A brand new concept is being introduced to the market through TOSHIBA's USX EDGE heat pump/chillers:
selected, standardized pre-configurations that meet the needs of customers mean that units can be permanently in stock and delivered at great speed. And the same is true of spare parts!
Everything comes from the warehouse in Vienna – and there are no restrictions, such as plant shutdowns during the peak vacation season.

It goes without saying that special versions with options and extensive accessories are also available on request.
Even this traditional built-to-order concept is handled by TOSHIBA with moderate delivery times.

The unique product concept also allows an existing heat pump and chiller system to be replaced, should it have failed completely, for example, within several working days – sparing the customer from the cost of hiring a replacement.

8. A SIMPLE APP IS AVAILABLE FOR MONITORING MOBILE SYSTEMS AND ENERGY

The flash monitor system from USX Edge has a WLAN SD card in the chiller module, which communicates using the corresponding app in an Android tablet.
This tool is available for everything from simple commissioning to transparent data management.

Examples include:

  • Displaying operating times for all components
  • Calculating the amount of water needed
  • Displaying and maintaining a history of error codes
  • Defining maintenance cycles for compressors, fans, and pumps
  • Displaying data for all operating pressures and temperatures in real time
  • Comparing live data with saved data
  • Clear trend graphics for operating values
  • Displaying pressures & temperatures in the animated refrigeration cycle
  • Providing system reports with an export function
  • And much more…
