For an air conditioner to be able to work in heating or cooling mode, it requires refrigerant. This is a gas that transports heating or cooling energy from the inside to the outside, or vice versa.

Which refrigerant does TOSHIBA use?

Up until 2016, R410A refrigerant was almost exclusively used for air conditioners. As of January 2025 at the latest, this will no longer be the case for split systems with a small fill quantity of up to 3 kg. According to legislation, another refrigerant must be used after this date. TOSHIBA now offers several split air conditioners with the new R32 gas.

Why R32?

Our environment lies close to our hearts and global warming is an unfortunate fact. Although it only has a very small impact, refrigerant still contributes to global warming – this impact can be calculated using the GWP (Global Warming Potential) unit of measure.

R32 has a value of 675, which is considerably lower than the R410A with a GWP of 2,088. In addition, R32 is more energy efficient and demonstrates a higher heat transfer capability than R410A – an air conditioner with the same fill quantity can achieve a capacity increase of roughly 60%.

What is the CO2 equivalent and how is it calculated?

As of January 2017, the CO2 equivalent must be specified on an outdoor unit. This is calculated by multiplying the GWP with the refrigerant fill quantity and the result is expressed in tons.

Lower GWP x smaller fill quantity = very low CO2equivalent.

Thus, R32 fulfils the requirements of the legislator & the environment in equal measure.

R32 is sustainable, efficient, and future-proof – we will be using it for many years to come until it is eventually replaced by something even more effective. When investing in an air conditioner from TOSHIBA, the customer can be certain that their system more than meets the latest technological standards, and that the fundamental values of sustainability, efficiency, & future-proofing are realized to the highest level.
